I was really happy that my mum and dad had managed to go on holiday to Bridlington. Mum has been very ill (she has terminal cancer and a whole host of other illnesses and dad has chronic asthma and osteoperosis in his spine). They were both feeling really well and enjoying the lovely hotel but I've had a call from my sister today. Mum has had a really bad fall and has broken both her hands!!! Apparently both her eyes are black and she has cut her lips quite badly. She had to have an anasthetic so they could straighten one of her hands (which is really risky for mum because of her health). Dad was packing their stuff at the hotel when he phoned my sister at about 12ish. He is bringing her home.
I'm worried because I don't really know what happened. I assume dad had to call an ambulance as mum can only walk a few steps at the best of times and I don't know if he's been at the hospital all night. Apparently, they have to take some xrays to the hospital in Sheffield as there is no othapaedic specialist in Bridlington now. I have so many questions but don't want to try to phone dad in case he is driving. I'm just glad I'm off work so I can whizz round as soon as they get back.

Dear Julie So sorry to hear this sad news. Your poor Mum with all her problems and now this on top. Life must be hard for them both and now an additional worry. Accidents happen but what a shame it had to happen at all never mind in a strange place. I hope things turn out to be not as bad as they sound at the moment. On the bright side the hospital have allowed your Mum to travel home with your Dad so that's reassuring. They haven't kept her in or transferred her by ambulance so that's good news. I'm worried about you though Julie, please don't do too much, easy for me to say I know, and do remember to look after yourself too. Thinking of you, Love Lyn x

Hi Julie, I`m so very sorry that this has happened to your poor mum, especially on top of her other health problems. And your poor dad, having to cope with everything. I do hope your mum`s hands heal quickly. It is bound to be an anxious time for you - you will not settle until you have seen them for yourself. Do take care, Julie - you are bound to be stressed. Oh Julie - I'm so sorry to hear this. Your lovely Mum obviously has more than enough to cope with already without a fall.
I hope her poor hands get better quickly and that your Dad isn't too shocked by it all. Love Jeanxxxxx

Thank you all for your messages. It seems things were a bit of a shambles at the hospital in Bridlington. On Monday night when mum went, they managed to undislocate her little finger on her left hand then just sent her home (well hotel) because they only have x-ray facilities 2 days a week . She went back yesterday morning and they found that she has 4 breaks in her left hand and 2 in her right. they put a splint on the dislocated finger but then just put crepe bandages on her hands??? and told her to take her x-rays and notes to A&E in Sheffield. They didn't get back until after 5pm and hadn't had anything to eat all day. When I saw mum I was really shocked. Both her eyes are completely black. The hospital think she has broken her nose as well and her top lip is so badly grazed it shook me up. My sister and I got them some dinner and they were thinking of not going to the hospital until this morning as they were both exhausted - but mums right had was a relly strange colour and was massively swollen. We went up to A&E just after 7pm. The doctors were not happy with how mum had been left with no proper support for her hands and couldn't believe how she was bearing the pain. She can't take coedine so the doc went all through her drug regime to find a pain killer that wouldn't interact with all the other meds she's on in case they had to re-set her hand. They re-xrayed and things looked ok luckily. I left the hospital about 9.30 and they were waiting to put a proper cast and sling on for her. I haven't phoned them yet this morning as I am hoping they managed to get some sleep. Julie

Oh Julie - your poor parents. What a disgraceful way to treat anyone, let alone an elderly lady with so many other health related issues. I just feel so sad for them.
Please give them my very best wishes
Love Jeanxxxxx

Mum is a bit more comfortable today. Jim and I stayed with them all day. She is just really upset about not being able to do anything for herself. She can't use one hand at all and can just about use a fork to feed herself with the other hand. My fat handled cutlerly has come in to good use!
